  BSPRA. SAFETY RULES 2004  

The rules and regulations set forth here apply to BSPRA and are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of racing events and to establish minimum acceptable requirements for such events.  These rules shall govern the conduct of all race events.  By participating in these events, all membership holders are deemed to have complied with these rules.

NO EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OR SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM PUBLICATIONS OF OR COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES AND/OR REGULATIONS.  They are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guaranty against injury or death to participants, spectators or others.  All participants are expected to know the rules and any claimed ignorance of the rules will not be accepted or tolerated as an excuse. Each participant agrees to abide by these rules and to accept the decision and direction of BSPRA officials in the enforcement of these rules.

It is the responsibility of the driver of the car to see that his/her car completely satisfies the rules, including but not limited to all safety rules.  The driver of each car represents to the promoter and all others that his/her car has satisfied all applicable rules, including but not limited to safety rules, whenever such driver participates in warm-up, practice or competitive laps. 

     A.  DRIVER AREA

  1. Approved racing (bucket type) seats are required.

    a.  Seat to be securely anchored to frame and/or roll cage at floor level and at seat back near shoulder level.

    b.  High back seats must be able to support driver's head in the event of a rear impact.

  2. Drivers uniform (fire suit) is defined as a one or two piece suit of flame resistant material (Nomex, Proban) as supplied by a safety equipment manufacturer (Racequip, Simpson, Hinchman, etc).
     

    a.  Approved single layer fire suits are the minimum for all drivers.

    b.  It is recommended that single layer suits be backed up with Nomex underwear.

    c.  Care should be taken by the driver to avoid oils, greases or other contaminants that may compromise the effectiveness of the uniform.  This is difficult but it is also for your safety.

    d.  2-layer gloves are recommended and Nomex driver's gloves are required.  No cotton canvas or other flammable fabric.  Gloves must be worn during all events and during practice sessions.

    e.  Shoes should have a leather upper.  Low topped shoes should be accompanied by Nomex socks.
    f.  Neck support recommended.  High-density foam covered  with durable Nomex/Proban cover.
     

  3. Approved helmets which have a Snell-M85 rating, minimum SA rating preferred.  Sticker must be present.
     

  4. Safety; belts and harness must be mounted to frame, frame components, and/or roll cage.  Avoid attachment to floor pans without support from roll cage.

    a.  5-piont design required; minimum 3" lap/2" shoulder with sub-strap.

    b.  Single latch release, or Cam-lock

    c.  Shoulder harness to be supported at or near shoulder level.

    d.  Reinforced head support recommended on right side of seat.
     

  5. All competing cars must have charged 2 1/2 lb. fire extinguisher, ABC rated with gauge.  Must be mounted within driver's reach, securely fastened yet usable.
     

  6. Care should be taken when mounting gauges and switches so not to create edges that could injure the driver in a crash.

    a.  Roll-bar padding suggested.

    b.  Suggest switches be mounted to left of steering column for access by  emergency personnel.

                  

     B.  GENERAL SAFETY

  1. Approved fuel cells mandatory in all cars.  Must be in a steel can.
    Check rules for fuel cell size limits.

    A.  Fuel cell can must be mounted so as not to shift in a crash, minimum 3 straps, 2 parallel and 1 at 90 degrees to them.
     

  2. All cars must be constructed so driver is completely shielded from fuel cell with a minimum 22 gauge steel firewall.  Rear wheel wells included.
     

  3. Class approved throttle linkage.  If not specifically approved you may not use cable throttle linkage, driver must be able to produce some force at carburetor to return a stuck throttle (toe hook) when strapped in. Must have a double return spring at carburetor in addition to a  "mouse trap" spring.

    A.  No forward facing hood scoops.

    B.  Air cleaner/filter mandatory on all cars.
     

  4. Minimum wheel stud diameter to be 5/8".
     

  5. Windshield opening must have a minimum of 3 straps per tech approval.
     

  6. No synthetic crankcases lubricants, no antifreeze.  $50.00 fine  imposed if antifreeze is confirmed.
     

  7. No pit boards.
     

  8. Mandatory tow hooks for front and rear on all cars.
     

  9. No mirrors allowed.
           

  10. No radios allowed.
     

  11. Must run BSPRA approved tires.

  C.  APPEARANCE           

  1.  Competing cars should be kept neat appearing and painted.

A.  Fenders should be rolled inward to reduce chance of cut tires and injury to fans in the pits after an event.
