The Rocky Mountain Pro Stocks held their Championship night, Saturday September 17th, at Mission Valley Speedway. Going into the night, the top three cars were within 6 points of each other in the standings, so they weren’t just racing for a win but also to become Class Champion with year-end points. Chuck Morigeau and Brad Lee were tied for first with Jarred Burland 6 points behind.
After some problems in the pits before the races, and having to replace his clutch, Jarred Burland came out and had fast time of the night with a 16.38. He was able to make up some ground in the points race as he came out and won the first race of the night, the A heat. Morigeau was second and RJ Olsen third. Heat B had Carl Nordberg in first until the last lap, when Chuck Reese got under Nordberg and took the lead. Brad Lee was having problems, finishing last and loosing position in the points.
Russ Burland came out leading the first 4 laps of the B trophy dash but was loose out of turn 4. He almost saved it, until second place Tracy Burland got into the back of him. Russ spun across the finish line, but avoided hitting the wall. Josh Burland restarted in first and was able to get his first trophy of the year. The A Dash was a battle between Morigeau and Jarred Burland, with Jarred now only trailing Morigeau by 4 points in the championship. Morigeau got the early lead, but Jarred was gaining fast. It was a drag race to the finish line with Morigeau winning by a couple of inches.
The Pro Stock drivers were introduced by announcer Lynn Olsen before the main, and each racer handed out signed hat to kids in the audience. Tracy Burland opted to start in the back of the main, due to engine problems and not wanting to cause any problems for the drivers that were racing for the points. Tracy was only able to complete seven laps before returning to the pits as to not cause any further engine damage.
On lap 23 Wade Shepard was leading with Jarred right behind when Shepard’s axle broke down the front stretch. Shepard spun and landed hard in the dirt on turn one. Jarred also spun, but was able to get it back around and continue with the race. Jarred then had the lead, but on the restart Morigeau got into third and was moving up. After five laps on the restart, Dan Krahn got loose on the back stretch spinning into the infield. Water got up onto the track as he spun, causing Nordberg to spin also.
Everyone was racing hard toward the end of the race, with Jarred Burland leading but Morigeau right behind him. Morigeau tried a few times to get around Burland, but didn’t have the position and during one of these tries received a warning from the flagman.
With three laps to go, Reese spun in turn 2, causing RJ Olsen and Krahn up into the dirt to avoid. After one lap on the restart, Krahn got into Josh Burland causing him to spin and Reese ended up hitting Josh. Krahn was black flagged for rough driving and sent to the pits. Jarred had a good restart and was able to get a little space between himself and Morigeau. Jarred took the checkered followed by Morigeau and Nordberg.
Burland got the win on the main, but was unable to pass Morigeau in the points. Morigeau won the Class Championship by 3 points over 2004 champion Jarred Burland. Brad Lee, who was tied in first at the start of the night finished third in points, due to car trouble throughout the night. Trentin Conko and Noah Fouty were happy to see Jarred get the win, as they had his hats from the driver introductions and each won $25.
