The Rocky Mountain Pro-Stocks had their inaugural race at Mission Valley Speedway Saturday night, August 27. Although Big Sky Pro Racing Association, BSPRA, is an international touring group that is not associated with a specific track this felt like home, as seven of the eleven Pro-Stock drivers are past Champions at this track, with all but one racer having raced at Mission Valley Speedway in the past. Chuck Morigeau took home two trophies, winning the featured main event and an earlier trophy dash.

This was the fourth race on BSPRA’s 2005 schedule having previously raced in Euphrata, WA, Penticton B.C., and Calgary AB. This weekend was the first of two races that were negotiated between BSPRA and Mission Valley Auto Racers (MVAR), the second to be held September 17th.

After Faith Matt sang the national anthem, the Pro-Stocks started off the night with their A Heat. Josh Buland got a good jump at the green flag, leaving everyone else trying to catch him. On the fifth lap, Chuck Morigeau was trying to get around Wade Shepard but didn’t have the position and ended up getting into Shepard who spun on turn 2, sending both cars to the back. RJ Olsen had been having an oil leak during hot lapping, and started smoking after nine laps, causing flagman, Guy Stinger, to give him a mechanical black flag in order to keep any oil from getting on the track. No one was able to catch up with Josh Burland as he led every lap for the win.

The B Heat had the other half of the class lining up. Carl Nordberg too an early lead, but his car was loose through the corners and he ended up spinning in turn 2. Tracy Burland had taken the lead from Nordberg the lap before the spin, and Burland led the remaining laps to take the checkered.

Trophy Dashes were then lined up taking the 1st and 2nd places from each heat in the A Dash, with 3rd and 4th places in the B Dash. The only driver to have never raced at Mission Valley Speedway (MVS), Rookie Chuck Reese, won his second trophy of the year when he won the B dash. The A dash featured all past champions at MVS, so it was a battle for positions. Morigeau got the win followed closely by Tracy Burland, Jarred Burland and Josh Burland.

Fred Matt was invited into the flag stand as the honorary starter, throwing the green flag as all eleven cars started the main. Nordberg was loose again in the main and ended up hitting the front wall coming out of turn 4 on the 3rd lap. He was uninjured, but was done for the night. There were a couple other unassisted spins involving Wade Shepard and Dan Krahn. Tracy Burland was leading with his son Jarred catching him. Jarred got position going into turn 1 when Tracy come down, making contact and sending Tracy up toward the dirt. He then came back down the track as the last of the group was coming into the corner. His other son Josh turned down trying to avoid and Russ Burland ended up hitting Josh in the driver side. Both cars went off the track and were unable to return. RJ Olsen pulled off a lap later with continuing engine problems.

The remaining 25 laps went on without incident having 7 cars finish the main event. Morigeau finished first followed by Tracy Burland and Brad Lee. In addition to starting the main, Fred Matt also provided his 1957 Chevy as the trophy car with Brittany Nordberg serving as BSPRA’s trophy girl for the night.

BSPRA gave out buttons, checkered flags and pinwheels to the crowd. The kids were also given a chance to win over $25 from the Pro Stock drivers. Each driver gave out 2 signed hats, as they were being introduced by BSPRA announcer Lynn Olsen, before the main. The two kids with the main event winner’s hat got the cash. Tashina Matt and Jesse Drake were the two cheering hard for Chuck Morigeau, as they had his signed hats and walked away with the money. Kids could also take the hats to the pits after the races and collect all eleven drivers’ autographs.

BSPRA would like to thank everyone that helped to make this weekend a huge success: Fred Matt and all of the CSKT Tribal Council and Division of Lands; MVAR board members-Jerry Taber, Shawn Blixt and Jon Blixt for helping to negotiate a contract; Anderson Broadcasting for all their advertising, and all of the fans that came out and showed their support. BSPRA’s next race is again at Mission Valley Speedway September 17th. For more information go to the official web site: www.bigskyracing.net
